Abstract
The vitamin C content of fresh fruits harvested and consumed in West Africa, particularly in Senegal, has been determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Eleven of the twenty-nine fruits studied have a vitamin C content higher than 20 mg%. The richest are Detarium senegalense (up to 1180 mg%), Adansonia digitata (165 mg%), Psidium goyava (156 mg%), and Anacardium occidentale (150 mg%). This study suggests that the consumption of fresh fruits harvested in Senegal can meet the physiological needs in vitamin C of the Senegalese throughout the year.
